Multilateralism, brought in after 1945, has come under strain. Faced with increasingly complex challenges, it appears to have lost its effectiveness. Given the growing number of players on the international stage, its legitimacy is being contested. With the rise in nationalism in many countries that blame their economic and social problems directly on multilateral action, the reactions often appear imbalanced. Are we to conclude that multilateralism is dead?
